All my bags are packed

Goodbye, USA, hello Argentina!

Polo argentino en línea/Argentine Polo Online

As I mentioned in a recent post, the world of polo is new to me. I have scoured the net for information on polo, especially in Argentina, and wanted to create a list of useful resources. This is a work in progress and will be updated!

The governing body of polo in Argentina: Asociación Argentina de Polo. (You can follow them on Twitter as well.) Here is the international one: Federation of International Polo.

Website in English that cover polo in Argentina, both seem to be updated very often: Polo Line and Living Polo.

The US news program 60 Minutes did a feature on polo earlier in 2012. I enjoyed this short video on how they made the program – it really shows how fast the sport is. Their slow motion shots are just gorgeous.

Puesto Viejo is a gorgeous polo club and hotel on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. A great place to come out for a Polo Day in the country.

One week to go!

In one week, I will be landing in Buenos Aires and I will officially be noruega en Argentina! Right now, I am still noruega en Estados Unidos… To make my last week in the US more interesting, Hurricane Sandy has decided to descend on the East Coast. Our office is closed tomorrow and people are stockpiling food and water. (I, on the other hand, declared myself “hurricane prepared” after filling a big pot with water and baking two honey cakes and a tin full of chocolate chip almond cookies.)

Learning new things

Polo Pony Clip Art

As I mentioned before, I have been riding horses since I was a little girl, but I have never tried polo. It looks fun, but also difficult! Of course the actual riding-while-trying-to-hit-a-ball-and-not-fall-off is the most daunting, but I also have a lot to learn about the sport and the rules of the game. Of course, we can’t learn a sport from watching videos, but I actually found some really good videos on YouTube that explain the rules, the different ways of hitting the ball, and other important things. (One thing I do not understand, though, is how do you avoid getting hit by the other players?)

Here is a great video on the rules and the tack: Polo – Rules of the game.

Horsemart has several good videos on how to play Polo, including this great intro.

I also enjoyed this polo lesson from the Dubai Polo Academy.

Ellerstina Wins the Tortugas Open/Ellerstina campeón de Tortugas

The final of the Tortugas tournament was played today, and Ellerstina beat La Dolfina 12-11. The game was actually played at Palermo, not at Tortugas Polo Club, because the fields at Tortugas were still too wet. Ellerstina won their seventh consecutive Tortugas Open, while for La Dolfina, it is the only Triple Crown competition they haven’t won. The same two teams competed for the Tortugas Open last year, so it was probably a bitter loss for La Dolfina.

Triple corona/Triple Crown

In Argentina, the three most important polo tournaments are referred to as la Triple corona, or the Triple Crown. The three tournaments are Tortugas, Hurlingham, and the world-famous Abierto de Palermo/Palermo Open. The Tortugas final is Thursday, October 22 (it was supposed to be last weekend but was postponed because of heavy rains), and Hurlingham starts on Saturday, October 27 (also delayed because of rain) and the final is set to take place on November 10. The Palermo Open will start on November 17, with the final on December 8.

This means it is a very busy time for polo in Argentina! There are two websites in English that seem to have all the updates on the Triple Crown, one is Polo Line and the other is Living Polo. Living Polo describes the Triple Crown as “the world’s leading and always much-awaited trilogy of tournaments which attracts polo fans from all around the globe.”

Norwegians in Argentina – History

There is very little information on Norwegians in Argentina in general, and that includes historical information. According to this short article on Norwegian emigration history, there were 1700 Norwegians in South America in 1920, the majority of them in Argentina. The University of Oslo, together with several other institutions, has started a research project on Norwegians in Latin-America 1820-1940.

After the end of World War II, a shameful part of our emigration history started: a small number of Norwegian Nazi collaborators went to Argentina: In July 1947, 12 (some say 15) men broke out of jail in western Norway, where they were imprisoned for collaborating with the Germans and/or being members of the German-friendly party NS. The men stole a boat, Solbris, in which they traveled to England, Spain, Tenerife, Brazil, and finally Argentina, where they remained for the rest of their lives. The Norwegian authorities tried to get them extradited back to Norway, but with no luck.

There was a lot more Swedish immigration in Argentina, as detailed in this Wikipedia entry on Swedish Argentine.

Language confusion

I am Norwegian. Soy noruega. Jeg er norsk. So what language should I write in?? I want this blog to be about my experiences as a Norwegian in Argentina, but of course I want everybody I know to be able to read it. I thought about writing in both English and Spanish, but I think it will be too much work. So for now I will write in English, and then maybe once in a while write in Norwegian on specific topics.

Noruegos en Argentina

There doesn’t seem to be a lot of Norwegians in Argentina; I think the embassy estimates 200 in the BA area and another 100 in the rest of the country.

When I search for noruegos en Argentina, or nordmenn i Argentina, or Norwegians in Buenos Aires, there are not that many relevant hits, but here are a few of the main sites:

First, the embassy (I already registered there so I have gotten my first events email!): Noruega: el portal oficial en Argentina

Then there is the Chamber of Commerce: CANC – Cámara Argentina Noruega de Comercio

The Instituto Sueco Argentino has one Norwegian class: Instituto Sueco

There is a Swedish church and a Danish church, but no Norwegian one.

Borealidad is a site for Nordic culture and news, but it hasn’t been updated since June. Borealidad – Cultura Nordica.

As far as blogs go, there are some cool ones written by Norwegian exchange students, I think they are all with AFS, and I was an AFS student in high school so of course I find that very cool! A lot of them can be found on this Norwegian page that is sort of a consolidator of exchange student blogs: Utvekslingsblogger

One I particularly liked was this one: Marthe i Argentina. It is so well written and reflects a lot of the things I went through when I was an exchange student.

I will try to update this when I find new stuff.

På norsk om Argentina

Jeg vil gjerne legge ut informasjon og artikler om Argentina på norsk. Jeg kommer til å skrive en del selv, men også legge ut lenker. Det er ikke så mye der ute men litt finnes jo:

Aftenposten: Fant drømmen i Buenos Aires.
