A weather blog
I am afraid of turning into a very local weather.com but as a good Norwegian I am fascinated by weather! And this last week has been crazy. First, tons of rain. Then a few days, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, of sun and very, very high temperatures, reaching 35 degrees on Wednesday. Hottest September 11 in Buenos Aires in 60 years! Then the weather turned Thursday, it was cold and rained on and off until Saturday. Sunday it started raining for real and it hasn’t stopped! It is raining heavily, and unfortunately not just outside… It is literally raining inside the bathroom, water is entering from a variety of places where the ceiling meets the wall. And in my room, there is a steady stream in a corner… The bucket fills up every few hours. I got the head of maintenance in her this morning so that he can see how bad it is when it is actually raining, and I think he got it! I have told him many times that it rains inside here, but he hasn’t seen how bad it is. The upside to all this rain: I took a wonderful nap this afternoon!!

The nicest guests
There are some people that just stand out, and a family that came this weekend was a prime example of that. Four of them, mom, dad, and two daughters, had been here in June and loved it, and they came back with the dad’s brother and his family, and their 86 year old mother – they came to celebrate her birthday. So sweet! And because they are so nice, we put on our best show. They had told us that she was of Croatian origin, so we did some research and our chef made a Croatian nut roll, a sort of yeast bread roll with nuts and honey. Awesome! We received them Saturday morning with coffee, tea and this cake and they were so happy!! She said it was perfect! So nice.
We also went to the flower market in Buenos Aires on Thursday, and bought lots and lots of red and white flowers, representing the color of the Croatian flag (it also has blue but that didn’t really work flower-wise). We put red and white flowers everywhere, and it looked amazing (cannot believe I don’t have a photo!) At night, we set up two dinners, one for them, and one in another room for the other guests. They could chose between steak, salmon, and a vegetarian option, and for dessert, of course, a gigantic beautiful birthday cake – chocolate with a filling of strawberries and cream. Ah! Feliz cumple abuelita!!

Food in plastic
When I was in Norway I just couldn’t get over how much plastic there was on the meat and produce! Of course I knew that there weren’t a lot of butchers or greengrocers left, but I found it very depressing to buy avocado packed in a small plastic box which was then wrapped in plastic, or fish in a sad white container. I guess it is cost effective for the companies to do it this way, but it feels soooo wasteful and industrialized.
Rain rain rain
Yesterday was gorgeous, it was probably 20 degrees and warm and sunny. Beautiful day, especially since we are still in winter! Then last night it started raining like crazy, with thunder and lightning and general storming. It was SO loud, and while it stopped for a little while, it is now pouring down again. It was estimated that we would get 30mm of rain. Of course this is quite usual for this time of the year, I am told. But – there is a wedding here today! And they were going to have the ceremony outside… I know they were already making alternate plans because of the forecast, so they will do it inside, although I am not quite sure how they will work it out since the main room is already set up with tables etc. for dinner.
And when it rains here, it pours – we will be wearing rain boots for the next few days! There will be mud and grass and all that fun stuff.. But, I am sure they will have a good time anyway!

Spring in Argentina
So the noruega is once again noruega en Argentina. I arrived last night after what was not a bad 14 hour flight from Amsterdam. And the best of it all is that my big bag of IKEA goodness went through customs without any issues! I really had a lot of stuff – two bags of close to 23 kilos each, a small carry on (which had the last of the IKEA bits and pieces, like a whisk and a light bulb!), a purse, and then a shopping bag with some duty free makeup and chocolate I bought upon arrival (the airport is one of the very few places in Argentina where one can buy with pesos on the official rate, i.e. prices are in US dollars but one can pay in pesos with the official exchange rate.)
Today was a little chilly but I can see that spring is in the air – the days are longer and the light seemed different. It was wonderful to see friends, neighbors and colleagues again, and “my” kitten was still around! She mainly lives in the barn with three brothers, but I had her inside for a lot of the winter, so I was a little worried when I left, but she is fine.
Lots of political stuff going on that I’d like to comment on, such as BsAs mayor Mauricio Macri announcing his candidacy for president, but that will have to be another day. Now I will go to sleep! I look forward to my first full spring in Argentina and can’t wait for November and the jacaranda trees in full bloom!

Going to the beach – Norway style
Until yesterday, we had a full week of amazing weather, sunny and 20 degrees every day. Ah! I went out to the islands Monday and Wednesday as well, and had some wonderful swims. I am so happy we had this kind of weather this late, it is almost unheard of. Here’s a photo from the “beach” at Hovedoya:

The nice (but complicated) guests
After close to a year in the hospitality business, categories of guests start to form in my head. You have the easy ones, who don’t ask for anything extra, don’t make many changes, like the food, etc. There are always some that are more difficult, where you have to be on your toes all the time, others again that complain about random things that I have no power over, such as the weather or barricades on the Buenos Aires highway.
Then there is another category, that took me a little longer to define: the nice, but complicated guests. These guests are generally very nice and friendly, they are enthusiastic about lots of stuff and they want to try all the activities we offer. Where they differ from regular nice guests is that they always want something different and something extra. They want polo lessons – but they keep changing the time or they show up an hour late. They love the food – but they want to eat at different times, they want to eat inside/outside/in their rooms. They show up late for their transfer. They lose stuff all over the place. They make changes to their reservation multiple times in one day. They are the kind of guests I really can’t complain about, because they generally tend to be nice, but they sure make our lives very busy! And they tend to give off an air of “the world revolves around me” which can be a little annoying…
