Wonderful guest, wonderful writing

In April we had a very sweet couple from England here at the hotel. One half of the couple, Mary, is very much a foodie and keeps a great blog: Adventures in fuzzy eating. While she was here, she came with me to the butcher, Carlitos. He is such a character and a really nice person! She took some wonderful shots of him and his shop.

She also tagged along when we went to the Central Market! The market is something special and she did a great job capturing the feel and the colors in two different posts: One about the fish market and one about the fruits and vegetables.

I hope it is OK to share a photo here, all credits Mary Sweeting:

Guía T – The best thing ever

guiaTbolsilloimagesEver since I came to Buenos Aires I loved the handy Guía T. It is basically your tiny bible to getting around BsAs by bus. Buses in BsAs are great – there are over a hundred different lines that will take you basically anywhere you need to go in the city (and for dirt cheap, but that is another story.) To know how to get from point to point, the Guía T is indispensable. Someone else has explained it better than I can so I will quote here from Wander Argentina:

There are three sections in the Guía T. In the front of the book, there is an alphabetical index of all the streets in Buenos Aires subdivided with various address ranges, each pointing you to a page with the appropriate map. The body of the Guía T is made up of tiny maps of the entire city with a list of the corresponding buses on the opposite page.  In the back of the book are all the various buses listed in numerical order with the details of their routes and pictures of the buses to demonstrate the color scheme of each line.

Of course, many people have smartphones now, and you can use websites such as Viaja Facil or OmniLíneas to plot your trip. However, the little Guía T is still great – it requires no connectivity and is also super useful as a map when exploring the city.

Buenos Aires Metrobus

Metrobus-FLOn July 24, Buenos Aires opened its 9 de julio Metrobus corridor. The city already had two other Metrobus corridors, but this one has gotten more publicity because of the location, on the city’s iconic Avenida 9 de julio. It is not a full blown Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, because it is mainly the already existing buses who use the dedicated lanes. However, it is a great improvement, because buses now have dedicated lanes, which means they don’t have to compete with cars and motorcycles for the space. This of course makes it safer and more comfortable for everybody.

I had the chance to take a few bus rides along the corridor yesterday and it was great!

Buenos Aires Hotels – updated

I decided to update this post since I have tried quite a few hotels lately. For some general tips, I will say that there are many, many hotels in Buenos Aires, some are really nice, but that it is difficult to get something that is consistently nice for a good price. Most will have some (or lots of!) street noise, as very insulated windows are not the norm. Breakfast is usually more continental, but quite a few places will offer eggs as well. As for what areas to stay, I personally think Recoleta and Palermo are the best places for tourists to stay. Palermo is really nice but can be a little bit of a hike from the main tourist attractions. Then again, there are lots of restaurants and bars there, so at night it is perfect.

I will have to say that Duque Hotel in Palermo SoHo might be the nicest hotel I have seen so far. It is beautiful, the staff is great, breakfast is delicious, and the rooms are just great, especially because the beds are SO comfortable! I especially loved staying there the day we went to La Rural: it had been a very cold day and to arrive at such a nice place after freezing all day was fantastic!

Here are a few of my hotel reviews:

Bonito Bed and Breafast, San Telmo Short version: Absolutely adorable but way too many spiral staircases!

Dazzler Tower Recoleta

Esplendor Palermo Hollywood

Marseille des Anges, Recoleta

I will leave my original comments from April 27 here: After I came to Argentina, I have become quite a fan of booking.com It seems to be the best way to see good prices for hotels in Buenos Aires, and you can usually reserve without paying anything, although sometimes you get different rates depending on whether you prepay or not.

I have stayed at a few different hotels since I have been here: Abasto Hotel, Esplendor Palermo Hollywood, Dazzler Tower Recoleta, A Hotel (which is not a good name for a hotel, try searcing for it!), and Marseille des Anges. I have returned to Esplendor and Marseille des Anges. Esplendor is located in Palermo Hollywood so close to restaurants and bars. It is very nice, with large rooms, comfortable beds (great for friends because they give you two large beds), small but functional bathrooms, nice breakfast. Also, most of the staff there is very nice! (According to a friend of mine, the only hot guys in Buenos Aires work at their reception!) It is a perfect choice for Palermo and usually you can get a good deal.

My current go-to hotel is Marseille des Anges in Recoleta. The hotel is in a beautiful building, and while the rooms can feel a little dated (it is no fancy boutique hotel), it has a nice feel and the staff is great. The rooms are comfortable, the bathroom is new and has lots of hot water, and there is TV with many English speaking channels! Wifi is free and very good. And the location just can’t be beat! After just a few times I am starting to think of it has a home away from home and I like the idea of feeling like a regular.

Barcelona – Valerenga 7-0

Oh well, I guess we all knew it would end like that! Barcelona won 7-0 and Messi scored a goal. All the Barcelona fans in Norway were of course thrilled to have their favorite team visiting, it doesn’t happen a lot.

Messi in Norway! Messi en Noruega!

729xmessi

A big day for fans of Barcelona and Messi, as the team arrived in Oslo yesterday to play a friendly against Vålerenga. Their team practice was duly photographed by all Norwegian news outlets, it seems.

Ayer jueves, Barcelona y su integrante mas famoso, Lionel Messi, llegaron a Oslo para el partido amistoso contra Vålerenga de Oslo a realizarse mañana.

On Location

Lately we have hosted quite a few productions here in the club. We had the South African television program in the end of June, then Volkswagen a few weeks ago, and last week a clothing company. Here is a German journalist taking some photos of Luis and Darío, our super gauchos!

Countdown to vacation time

In exactly two weeks I will be on my way to the airport, where I will catch a plane to go to Norway! (Via a European capital, as of course there is no direct flight to Norway.) I am starting to get very excited about my vacation! I will spend time in Norway, England and probably one or two other countries. I look forward to seeing friends and family and doing very little! The only bad thing is that I would have liked to have some time off here in Argentina, as I still have seen very little… There is currently a heat wave in Europe, unfortunately it looks like it will be long gone by the time I arrive in Oslo. Oh well!

There is polo in Norway now!

So this is kind of cool: when I started this blog, and when I moved to Argentina, there was no polo in Norway. Or Denmark, for that matter. Sweden was the only Scandinavian country with polo. But 2013 has seen all that change – Copenhagen now has a polo club, and in February this year, the Norwegian Polo Club opened! They have a great website where you can read about the founding of the club and its activities. And they have a close connection with Mat Lodder, an English professional who plays here at Puesto Viejo in the Argentine season. Mat and his wife Heather are fantastic both as people and professionals. Members of the club traveled to England earlier this year for their UK Training Weekend with Mat.

I definitely plan to check out the Norwegian Polo Club when I go to Norway this summer! The club is located south-east of Oslo. Oh, and I definitely want to buy some of their cute gear! Check out these great whites!
