Useful pages for planning

Matty, a New Zealander that used to live in BA, keeps this list of blogs in English from Argentina: Bloggers in Argentina.

Couchsurfing: A great community of travelers and locals. The BA group is particularly active and there are always activities going on. A great way for tourists to meet up with people, and for newcomers to make friends.

BAExpats: The Buenos Aires Expatriates Group has lots and lots of useful information. The members are a wealth of info on so many different topics and it has been helpful for me in finding out things like price level, how to exchange money, how to get a phone plan etc.

Before/after

I have a lively imagination, so that, together with photos, give me a mental picture of what my new life will be. But as always, things are always different when we actually get to see them! So I am very curious if my mental image is anything like reality. Not just the place, but my job, my colleagues, all that stuff.

I sure hope there are cute foals!

Two Summers!

I have to admit that I like the fact that I will go from one summer to another! It is currently fall in the northern hemisphere, and spring in the southern hemisphere, and by the time I get there it will be summer… I hear it can be brutally hot in the summer, and the polo club closes down in January, but hopefully it will be OK. I am used to hot summers where I live now but I spend my workday in an air conditioned office, so that doesn’t really count I guess…

Cañuelas

I am going to be outside the town of Cañuelas, which is about an hour outside of the capital. It has 25,000 inhabitants and is known as being the “birth place” of dulce de leche. Buses into the capital take about an hour, and a little less if driving a car. I don´t know much about the town yet but look forward to getting to know it!

It’s official!

I have told my work, so now it is official! Most people seem very happy for me and I am realizing that many of us have a dream of breaking out of the cubicle.

Now I have a lot of things to do before November: Sell furniture, give away books and clothes, decide what to leave with friends, and cancel all sorts of stuff: Internet, electricity, cell phone, Zipcar, bikeshare, one of my credit cards… I also need to find out if there is a way to stop all the unwanted catalogs that always come. (I would feel bad for the new person living in my apartment if they keep receiving all the junk mail that I get!)

Why?

After close to eight years in a window less office, I have decided to pursue a passion of mine – horses and tourism. Argentina seemed like a good choice because of the strong horse culture there, and because it is spring now, i.e. start of the season. Italy would have been great but they are closing down soon, plus the economy is really bad.
