Our Guests

The guests, of course, is the main focus of a hotel, and so far I have enjoyed meeting every single one of them! (Well, except one.) Each day brings new people from new places and there is always good conversation. I would say that the guests are mainly European, North American, and Argentinian, with the occasional Australian or Brazilian thrown in. They can be divided roughly in two groups: those who come to play polo (many Brits but also Americans) and those who come to relax in the countryside, go for trail rides, lounge by the pool etc. The polo guests come from anywhere between 4-5 days and six months! Most, however, stay a week or two. The other guests usually stay for a shorter time, usually two or three days at the end of their stay, or as a weekend getaway from Buenos Aires. At meal times, everybody eats together at a big table so there is ample room for people to get to know each other.

We also receive some people on day trips, although on a small scale. People come for Polo Day, which is basically a one day introduction to polo for beginners, and Day in the Country Side, which means chilling in the campo and eating asado. (We often refer to it as Polo Day without Polo.) We usually only get a few people at a time, but last week we had 16 Russian tourists! But best of all, we had five Norwegians here last weekend! That was a lot of fun.

Norwegians at Puesto Viejo

Yesterday we had four Norwegians and a Swede at the Estancia! Two for Polo Day and three for Dia de Campo, or a Day in the Countryside. Very cool! They were such a nice family and I was delighted that they found us. We also had a Norwegian and a Swede staying with us for a few days early in December. I hope we get more! Time to start marketing ourselves in Norway…

Holidays in the South

I have spent several Christmases in hot climates before – Panama, Mexico,  California – but this was my first time spending the holidays in the Southern Hemisphere and it was very nice so far! I spent Christmas with Swedish Argentinian friends north of Buenos Aires, and it was perfect. Great food and great company. New Years I am set to spend with other friends in Uruguay!

Campo

In Argentina, the word “campo” is used to refer both to the countryside and to an estancia or ranch, as in “I work in a campo” or “I am going to the campo.” However, it is also used as an adjective, for instance to say that something is very campo. Or to say that something is not campo and does not fit in. I think I have a good grasp of what is campo now! For instance, cool handmade leather belts are very campo. So are the typical Argentine shoes alpargatas, or the gaucho pants, bombachas de gaucho. I have them all now!

Of course, nothing is more campo than my very own boots, or botas de campo. They were made to measure and are just great. They are lose and pull on style and very comfortable. My style sure is different now than it was just two months ago!

Abierto Argentino de Polo

I went to the famous Argentine Open, often just referred to as “Palermo” or “the Open/el abierto”, and it was quite the experience! Once again La Dolfina and Ellerstina were to meet in a final. It was every bit as fun and exciting as I had thought it would be. A bunch of us from the club and the hotel went and it was nice to see familiar faces from other clubs and even former guests. A couple of the girls and I ended up in the Ellerstina section (since I live in Canuelas I really should be more of a La Dolfina fan) and it was great fun. Ellerstina played wonderfully and very united and their win was well deserved.

After the game we partied with champagne and had a blast!

Polo Photos

I have realized that taking photos of polo is really difficult! First of all, the game is very, very fast. Secondly, the field is so big: “The playing field is 300 yards (274 metres) long by 160 yards (146 metres) wide, the approximate area of nine American football fields.” (Wikipedia.) So I don’t have any good polo shots yet. However, our club has a great Facebook page where you can see really good polo photography.

I do love taking pictures of the horses off the field, though, like this one:

A Dog’s Life

As I mentioned, the dogs are a big part of this place! And they are just so happy! Maxi, the dog from the story in the last post, runs around with a smile on his face all day, and Negrito knows exactly how to get what he wants: pets and cuddles.

Here are a couple of shots, first two of them are running over to play:
